De Vree and Okkenhaug Taste Champagne

The qualifying session was very tight, with the top 10 covered by less than 3 tenths of a second. It was a surpise polesitter though, in David de Vree, who has improved dramatically since the start of the season.

Championship leader Sandeep Singh was down in 5th, but he is getting very close to taking the title for Potentia.

There was some contact early on but in general, the race calmed down well and, although we saw issues for Szilagyi, Vazdar, Eterovic-Funcic, Robbins, Mennink and Day (the latter involved in contact with Charlotte, before turning left and spearing himself into the wall in a bizarre incident), ultimately it was De Vree who clung on to take victory for VMS Sunedits.

However, race 2 was a spicier affair. Already on lap one, we saw retirements for championship leader Sandeep Singh, who was involved with a 3-wide scrap in the tight sector two. Junio Lopes, van der Smissen and Singh all went side-by-side to a corner that usually is only single file, and major contact for all of them put them out of the running.

Worse though, was James Knox’s retirement on lap 3. Having made contact with Kristian Vazdar and Danny Robbins, which pushed Robbins wide, Danny retaliated by driving his car across the circuit and smashing in to Knox and Vazdar, in a shocking deliberate move.

At the front, Kert Rohtjaerv, Joe Gillett and Mikael Tuomaala were squabbling away to determine who might take victory. However, it was Okkenhaug, who was 4th for a long time in this battle, who overtook Mikael on the final lap to snatch victory for the second time in two rounds. He led only the final lap and the Hunter Burch Driver was ecstatic.

Singh has yet to mathematically take the title, but it surely can’t be long now.
